Amesoeurs- Amesoeurs

this is quite like Alcest, it even has Neige in its ranks. the difference here is that Amesoeurs has a lass in it. with lassy lass vocals. and no shrieking. its really good. you should try it. tr00 kvlt metulz heads like myself just LOVE to call this hipster black metal ( i mean come on girlz are gross guyz AND WHERE THE HELL IS THE CORPSEPAINT DAMMIT). so yeah its kind of the stuff that those dirty hipsters would do to be ironic one weekend and be like "hey guys lets make some black metal and record it out in the forest so it has that artsy fartsy nature worship feel to it. and this isnt dedicated to satan at all. this is dedicated to ourselves because we are our own gods"

just because im making fun of it doesnt mean that its not good. im just an elitist prick sometimes :)
ps this really is good GET IT FOR GOD'S SAKE

Alcest- Écailles de Lune

so you thought Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde was good, eh? well listen to this. this is better. this tears your soul open and eats the insides. this will make you fall to your knees twice as hard as Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde did. mostly because the bit of harsh vocals just showcase the agony and sadness that Neige has in his heart. between this and Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde i havent listened to much else. Last.fm says that ive listened to this album 90 times just this week. so yeah.
it's amazing.

Alcest- Souvenirs d'un Autre Monde

this album is amazing. black metal and shoegaze? much less Depressive/Suicidal Black Metal with Shoegaze? with clean vocals and no shrieking whatsoever on the whole album? is this even possible?!

yes. yes it is. this album brought me to tears with its beauty, and almost single-handedly got me through breaking up with my girlfriend. this album should be played whenever you feel sad just so you realise that youre not nearly as down as the bloke who wrote it. get this album. get it and it will restore you. it will bring peace to your mind and confirm that everything is quite alright.

ps my mixtape is in the works as soon as i remember what i did with my power cord ^____^

behold: progressive black metal. if you can ignore the shrieks and wailing THIS ALBUM DESTROYS. i personally like the shrieks and wailings since it makes the lyrics more emotionally charged and more human but thats just me!

Advaita: Grounded in Space

Ok, so this is probably the trippiest new band i've heard since... well... the last trippy band i heard. No, but seriously, Advaita are a New Delhi based band who use lots and lots of ethnic Indian instrumentation (e.g sitar, tambura, tabla, indian chant etc) and this is basically the chillest psychedelia band to come along since the Grateful Dead if you ask me.

psychotropic indian space rock!

Jean Michel Jarre: Oxygene

Ok, here's a rare gem of the 70's pioneer-ness. This can easily be called the first truly electronic album in history, released 1976, it's mainly psychedelic little compositions made entirely using synthesizers. You might have heard "Part IV" from before, it's a pretty catchy melody.
Anyways I felt the need to post this because albums like this cannot be forgotten. This is the grandfather of all techno, trance, electronica etc. that is today, and as is common in most such cases, this is better than most of the genres and artists it spawned.

blip blip blip

i havent even listened to this yet and i already know its gonna be ace.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea

Okay, if you haven't heard this album, you need to download it and listen to it like now. I know that we say that on this blog a lot, but i REALLY mean it with this album. This may be my all-time favorite album. You need to stick with it though, because it's not the most accessible album, but trust me; after a few listens and some time, this album will truly become ingrained into your psyche. It's got so many layers of meaning that I have still yet to reach, and each listen makes me fall in love with it yet again. It's truly genius.

Them Crooked Vultures

Ok, if you haven't heard this... you fail. This is the best classic rock album to be released since "Rated R" by QOTSA in 2000, and that's not just opinion, it's FACT. This album kicks some SERIOUS FUCKING ASS.
All these tracks are jizz-inducing, so I won't bother choosing the best ones.

1. No One Loves Me & Neither Do I
2. Mind Eraser, No Chaser
3. New Fang
4. Dead End Friends
5. Elephants
6. Scumbag Blues
7. Bandoliers
8. Reptiles
9. Interlude with Ludes
10. Warsaw Or The First Breath You Take After You Give Up
11. Caligulove
12. Gunman
13. Spinning in Daffodils

Sorry, but you're gonna have to buy this album.

naaah, just kidding.
but you really should buy it.

Rosetta- Wake/Lift

this album owns. hxc. its not as deep as their The Galilean Satellites (deep as in there are less lyrics and more juns and ambience) but THIS EFFIN OWNS. this is great to study to because it has emotional energy but not too much physical energy that it makes you want to mosh. you will bang your head at times though

Mixtape: I Can't Live Like This Forever

Well it's been quite a while since I posted, so sorry about that guys. But I have a real treat for ya'll today: the first Expatriate Experience Mixtape! Made by yours truly over the past few days, it consists of songs that I've been listening to lately as the world begins to shift over from winter to spring. There's a lot of indie pop type stuff on here, but then there's also some folk and nice acoustic stuff as well. I did my best to mix some obscure stuff with the more widely known material, so there's a good mix. The "theme" is the title of the mixtape, a line from one of the songs: I Can't Live Like This Forever. I don't know if everyone will see the same theme, but it's what I see. So enjoy, and give me some feedback. Expect more mixtapes in the next week or so!

Track Listing:
1. Beasts With Hearts of Gold by Watch Out For Rockets (For some reason, the last 2:30 of this track is blank, so sorry about that)
2. In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
3. Friends of P by The Rentals
4. Good by Better than Ezra
5. High Lonesome by The Gaslight Anthem
6. Genesis 3:23 by The Mountain Goats
7. Girlfriend by Phoenix
8. Peace and Love by Fountains of Wayne
9. Shirt Like A Couch by Get Him Eat Him
10. When It's Good by Ben Harper
11. Lion's Mane by Iron & Wine
12. Wordsearch by Hightide Hotel
13. Comfort Inn by Lewis & Clarke
14. My Doorbell by The White Stripes
15. Bright Future In Sales by Fountains of Wayne
16. St. Tropez by Summer Cats

Foreign Beggars- Asylum Agenda

my personal favourite UK Hip-Hop album, this is full of BLAZING raps and flow as cold as ice. some of its funkay frash and some of it sounds like a British Eminem. its sick.

verily verily, the Hip-Hop above all Hip-Hops

Nick Drake: Five Leaves Left

This is perhaps the best folk album I know. Nick Drake was just a genius. I'm tired as hell right now so I'll let the music speak for itself.

Must hear: Three Hours, The Thoughts of Mary Jane, Cello Song
Worthwile: Saturday Sun, Fruit Tree, River Man

1. Time Has Told Me
2. River Man
3. Three Hours
4. Way to Blue
5. Day is Done
6. Cello Song
7. The Thoughts of Mary Jane
8. Man in a Shed
9. Fruit Tree
10. Saturday Sun

Acid Witch- Witchtanic Hellucinations

ahhh Acid Witch. from good old Michigan, these guys manage to make amazing stoner/sludge and use old school death metal vocals to boot. oh yeah and they love durgz just as much as Witches doooo.

WITCHTANIC HELLUCINATIONS IS LIKE SATANIC HALLUCINATIONS BUT WITH WITCH AND HELL AT THE BEGINNING

that's just groovy

Aphrodite's Child: 666

This is truly the best non-American/English prog gem out there. 1972's "666" from the Greek prog rockers Aphrodite's Child (whose guitarist/keyboardist/producer Evangelos Papathanassious would later find huge fame under the name Vangelis) marked a new era of concept albums; despite the sometimes misleading title, the entire album is based upon the biblical Book of Revelation (yet it was banned in a huge number of Christian states and countries due to its 'suggestive' cover art- ironic much?). But really, this album has it all; beautiful, glistening, yet heavy psychedelic rock as seen in "The Four Horsemen" and "Aegian Sea"; abstract, dark anthems to humanity as seen in "∞"; jangly, almost comical art rock as seen in "The Beast"; and even some early drum & bass, as seen in "Do It". Definitely a must have for anyone who loves deep, tasteful, yet varied progressive rock.

Best tracks IMO: The Four Horsemen, Aegian Sea
Must hear: ∞, Do It, The Beast, Loud Loud Loud
  1. The System
  2. Babylon
  3. Loud, Loud, Loud
  4. The Four Horsemen
  5. The Lamb
  6. The Seventh Seal
  7. Aegian Sea
  8. Seven Bowls
  9. The Wakening Beast
  10. Lament
  11. The Marching Beast
  12. The Battle of the Locust
  13. Do It
  14. Tribulation
  15. The Beast
  16. Ofis
  17. Seven Trumpets
  18. Altamont
  19. The Wedding of the Lamb
  20. The Capture of the Beast
  21. Hic et Nunc
  22. All the Seats Were Occupied
  23. Break

Rosetta- The Galilean Satellites

you thought Omega Massif was grushing? TRY THIS ON FOR SIZE. intense buildups with legit riffs and the vox are like ARGH I AM STUCK IN THE SLUDGE PIT

Mother Europa calling me

Pondering what star will bring me where,
when will I get there,
who will I find,
calling out my name.

Across the forever night,
take me to see her,
the monolith,
that knows the tales,
dwelling inside man,
telling of the names,
dwelling inside me.

Take me to see her,
the monolith,
that knows the tales,
of my own misery,
crying out now.

Europa please,
hear my own screams,
how long will I.

How will I move on
How will I move on

Please take me again,
crossing over,
the nomad in roam,
searching on.

Stifled thoughts.
No way crossing over.
No way.
No way crossing over.
Take me away.

I'm Pondering what star will bring me where,
when will I get there,
who will I find,
calling out my name in the open.

The monolith,
dwelling inside man,
through the open.

Pink Floyd: Meddle

This is another forgotten gem in the vault of epic prog from the early seventies. Pink Floyd's 1971 album "Meddle" contains my favorite song of theirs, "Echoes". This 23-minute epic suite took up all of side 2 of the original LP (which I proudly own), and signifies the point where Pink Floyd went from being a jangly, psychedelic acid band, to becoming the most respected progressive rock group of all time. Also on the album is the perhaps the heaviest of all Floyd tracks, "One of These Days", an eerie, echo-bass driven anthem to the dark side of the human mind. The others are more acoustic and chill, while "A Pillow of Winds" is very folky.

Best track BY FAR: Echoes
Must hear: Fearless, One of These Days, A Pillow of Winds

1. One of These Days
2. A Pillow of Winds
3. Fearless
4. San Tropez
5. Seamus
6. Echoes

I'll throw in a little fun fact- in '67, the Floyd were asked, by Stanley Kubrick, to do the soundtrack for 2001: a Space Odyssey (which, if you haven't seen, you REALLY should), but turned the offer down, as they were already working on a soundtrack for a french film (that actually sucked and was a box office bomb). However, once the movie came out in '68, they regretted missing the opportunity... and if you synchronize the first "ping" sound at the beginning of "Echoes" with the moment the title for the last act of the movie appears, the song perfectly synchronizes with the trippiest movie ending of all time. This can be seen here.

Kyuss: Sons of Kyuss

Track Listing:
1. Deadly Kiss
2. Window of Souls
3. King
4. Isolation Desolation
5. Love Has Passed Me By
6. Black Widow
7. Happy Birthday
8. Katzenjammer

Epic stoner rock from Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures' Joshua Michael Homme III, before either of those bands. This album was recorded in 1990 before the band changed their name from Sons of Kyuss to simply Kyuss. One of the best stoner rock bands of all time, this album is full of churning, detuned, heavier than hell riffs of all time. So turn this on, sit back, and experience the sonic journey that is Kyuss.

*shels- Discography

*shels is the band that got me on the Post-Metal kick that i've been on for the last 4 months. the vocals are harmonic and not harsh (ie Isis) and the guitar work is extremely good. i wish i could find some tabs for this so i could jam =/
ask and you shall receive

Sea of a Dying Dhow

im not sure why but the italics button wont let me type normally so now what im typing looks very dramatic and well thought out. well its not. ive listened to this album not nearly as many times as Laurentian's Atoll but its just as good, even though its an EP without being an EP in spirit

you have chosen wisely

Steel Train: Trampoline

Track Listing:
1. I Feel Weird
2. Black Eye
3. Kill Monsters in the Rain
4. Dakota
5. Alone On the Sea
6. Firecracker
7. A Magazine
8. Diamonds In The Sky
9. Leave You Traveling
10. I've Let You Go
11. School is for Losers
12. Women I Belong To

Here's some awesome straight-up, no-frills indie rock. Actually that's kind of an oxymoron. Indie Rock is full of bells, whistles, and frills, and so is this album. Which is precisely what makes it awesome. There isn't a ton of experimentation on here, but it still manages to feel very fresh and exciting while at the same time familiar. A winning combination, if you ask me. Which you did if you decided to read this blog.

Michael Leviton: My Favorite Place to Drown

Well Tim's been putting the pressure on me to get some more stuff up here, and I shall oblige...
OK people, this is the first (and only) album from the Brooklyn-based ukulele master that is Michael Leviton. His music, much like that of Summer Cats, reminds me of summer (so what if I'm in a summer mood. I'm looking forward to it; sue me) and is some high-quality pop. His lyrics are excellent, his ukulele epic, and the whole thing makes for a wonderful listen.

Agalloch- The Mantle

Agalloch's second best album (in my humble opinion), this album is much more Folk-ie and pagan than AAtG, and there is alot more use of acoustic guitar and clean vocals.

ENJOY MY FUTURE PAGANS

ps oi mike you need to post more so i dont feel so lonely :((((((

Agalloch- Ashes Against the Grain

this album rules. it's ruled my Last.fm for at least a month. Limbs makes me want to cry with a passion so deep and profound that i dont understand what is happening to me. i consider Ashes Against the Grain to be Agalloch's best album, followed by their album The Mantle, which imma gonna post in a few seconds. this is probably one of my all time favourite albums ever. EVER.

BE WARNED: there are some harsh vocals thrown in with the beautiful melodies, and the "Black Metal" tag mostly refers to the lyrics that concentrate on paganism and the beauty of the forests of their home state of Washington.

Jon Foreman: Winter EP

Track Listing:
1. Learning How to Die
2. Behind Your Eyes
3. Somebody's Baby
4. White As Snow
5. I Am Still Running
6. In Love

This is the Winter EP by Jon Foreman of Switchfoot and Fiction Family. I'll upload the other three EPs (Spring, Summer, and Fall) within the next few days. Foreman's solo project is an excellent showcase for his songwriting talent, and I prefer it to most Switchfoot material, but then again, I'm in a folk/acoustic phase at the moment, so that's likely to change in the future. But give this EP a listen; I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Once again, I could only find a Rapidshare link for this one, but I'm gonna get around to uploading it to Megaupload or Mediafire sometime soon. For now though, here's a link:

Thee Kvlt Ov (((Øurøbørøs- BLVD

this is some intense Sludge. SO KVLT.
I've been digging this album for like a week now. now its your turn.

PS.: I'm TimJim, and as Mike said i do dig all sorts of different musics, BUT i primarily listen to Black Metal, Post-Metal, Sludge, and Stoner Metal. I promised i wont post much BM or Death Metal, so instead i'll post insane amounts of Sludge, Stoner, Shoegaze, and Dubstep/Grime for all you cool cats.

i go to school in Michigan and i would much rather be in Europe so thats about all you need to know about me.
Respectfully Yours,
TimJim

Uriah Heep: Demons & Wizards

By far one of the greatest prog albums of all time IMO, this is also my favorite album from Uriah Heep. It's pretty sad that they're practically forgotten these days, but back in '72 when this album was released, they were one of the biggest bands around.

Best Track IMO: The Spell
Must listen: The Wizard, Easy Livin, Circle of Hands, Rainbow Demon

1. The Wizard
2. Traveller in Time
3. Easy Livin'
4. Poet's Justice
5. Circle of Hands
6. Rainbow Demon
7. All my Life
8. Paradise
9. The Spell

As it's a bit of a rare classic, suggest you buy the album, but here's the download file.
Peace out.

Greetings from Norway

Evening folks! Alright, so this is my first contribution to The Expatriate Experience. Though theendofreason already did a pretty good job at summing me up, I might as well just tell you that I'm a hobby musician going to a music school in Norway, doing a one-year course on studio production. Other than that, I play guitar, harmonica, sitar, erhu, the occasional bass guitar and drums, plus I sing. Yeah. Life at music school is gooood.
Also, I have a passion for early Progressive Rock, Stoner Rock and Acoustic Folk. I'll give you a little taste in my next post!
Peace out.

Other New Contributor!

Okay, there's a new contributor on The Expatriate Experience! SoldierOfFortune is an awesome guy. I'll let him tell you a bit about himself, but for the time being, suffice it to say that he's Norwegian, he's an excellent musician, and he's got a love for 70's Prog Rock unlike any I have ever seen.

New Contributor!

Just announcing the addition of TimJim as a contributor to The Expatriate Experience. He's currently studying to be a pharmacist, even though his TRUE calling is to be the world's best drummer! His musical taste is incredibly vast, and I've made him promise not to post any uber-black or death metal on this blog haha. Expect some posts from him in the next few days!

Priestess: Hello Master

Track Listing:
1. I Am the Night, Color Me Black
2. Lay Down
3. Run Home
4. Two Kids
5. Talk to Her
6. Time Will Cut You Down
7. Everything That You Are
8. The Shakes
9. Performance
10. Living Like A Dog
11. No Real Pain
12. Blood

Ahhh Priestess...such a wonderful blend of Classic Rock riffs that sound as if they were lifted from the fingers of Tony Iommi himself and the massive Stoner Rock sound of Mondo Generator and Kyuss. This is guitar-driven modern rock at its very best, and this band is criminally underrated and unknown. If you're a fan of any sort of rock, this album is a must. It's far better than their second album, Prior to the Fire, and one that's been in heavy rotation on my iPod as of late. Best tracks include Blood, Two Kids, and Talk to Her.

The White Stripes: White Blood Cells

Track Listing:
1. Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
2. Hotel Yorba
3. I'm Finding It Harder to Be a Gentleman
4. Fell in Love with a Girl
5. Expecting
6. Little Room
7. The Union Forever
8. The Same Boy You've Always Known
9. We're Going to Be Friends
10. Offend in Every Way
11. I Think I Smell a Rat
12. Aluminum
13. I Can't Wait
14. Now Mary
15. I Can Learn
16. This Protector

This White Stripes album is my favorite one from them, with a very close second being Icky Thump. This was the album that made garage rock cool again, and re-introduced Delta Blues to the forefront of rock. The cavestomp drumming by Meg White has been subject to much debate, but the fact remains that her drumming perfectly compliments everything Jack White does on the guitar. And boy oh boy, does he do things.

Check it Out

William Fitzsimmons: Goodnight

Track Listing:
1. It's Not True
2. Hold On With My Open Hands
3. Everything Had Changed
4. Leave Me By Myself
5. Please Don't Go
6. You Broke My Heart
7. Body For My Bed
8. I Don't Love You Anymore
9. Mend Your Heart
10. Goodnight
11. Find My Way Home
12. Afterall

William Fitzsimmons is an excellent folk musician, his acoustic guitar and soft, almost-whispered vocals are perfectly calm, even when they deal with turbulent issues. Goodnight is my personal favorite by Fitzsimmons, and I believe it's aptly titled; it's perfect music for falling asleep to, and that in no way means it's boring. It's simply the perfect way to end a hectic day, or even a happy one. Just put this on your speakers and be whisked away to a quiet, peaceful place.

Summer Cats: Songs For Tuesdays

Artist: Summer Cats
Album: Songs For Tuesdays

Tracklist:
1. Let's Go!
2. Hey You
3. Super
4. Fulton Gurls
5. In June
6. Wilde Rice
7. Christopher Wren
8. Maybe Pile
9. Lonely Planet
10. Camel Cords
11. Waking Up
12. St. Tropez
13. Paperweight

I recently discovered this Australian twee group, and they've been in heavy rotation on my iPod and computer the past few weeks. Their music is super-happy; twee at it's best, and it makes me think of summer....it may be oh-so-far-away, but listening to Summer Cats makes it feel like it's right here.
