Pink Floyd: Meddle

This is another forgotten gem in the vault of epic prog from the early seventies. Pink Floyd's 1971 album "Meddle" contains my favorite song of theirs, "Echoes". This 23-minute epic suite took up all of side 2 of the original LP (which I proudly own), and signifies the point where Pink Floyd went from being a jangly, psychedelic acid band, to becoming the most respected progressive rock group of all time. Also on the album is the perhaps the heaviest of all Floyd tracks, "One of These Days", an eerie, echo-bass driven anthem to the dark side of the human mind. The others are more acoustic and chill, while "A Pillow of Winds" is very folky.

Best track BY FAR: Echoes
Must hear: Fearless, One of These Days, A Pillow of Winds

1. One of These Days
2. A Pillow of Winds
3. Fearless
4. San Tropez
5. Seamus
6. Echoes

I'll throw in a little fun fact- in '67, the Floyd were asked, by Stanley Kubrick, to do the soundtrack for 2001: a Space Odyssey (which, if you haven't seen, you REALLY should), but turned the offer down, as they were already working on a soundtrack for a french film (that actually sucked and was a box office bomb). However, once the movie came out in '68, they regretted missing the opportunity... and if you synchronize the first "ping" sound at the beginning of "Echoes" with the moment the title for the last act of the movie appears, the song perfectly synchronizes with the trippiest movie ending of all time. This can be seen here.
